About Middle Tennessee Electric
Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE), legally Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative headquartered at 555 New Salem Hwy in Murfreesboro. It traces its roots to the Stones River Electric Membership Corporation, formed on December 18, 1935, by organizers from Rutherford and Wilson counties; the name was changed to Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation at a meeting in Murfreesboro on May 11, 1936, and directors converted the system into a cooperative, non-profit membership corporation on May 22, 1939, after the Tennessee Cooperative Act passed. MTE serves more than 307,000 meters in a four-county area south of Nashville, with Rutherford, Williamson, Wilson and Cannon as its core counties, and says it employs more than 415 people who live in the communities it serves. MTE describes itself as the largest electric cooperative in the Tennessee Valley Authority region. The Murfreesboro headquarters lobby and drive-thru are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and MTE also has offices in Smyrna, Franklin, Lebanon, Mt. Juliet and Woodbury.
