What Is Downtown Murfreesboro Like?
Downtown Murfreesboro is centered on the historic Public Square and the 1859 Rutherford County Courthouse, one of six remaining antebellum courthouses in Tennessee. The walkable district surrounding it holds locally owned restaurants, boutiques, and antique shops, and it hosts free community events like Friday Night Live and the Saturday Market.
The courthouse sits in the middle of the square, and the storefronts around it face in on all four sides, so most of downtown Murfreesboro can be covered on foot. Main, Church, Maple, Vine, and College streets branch off the square with more restaurants, coffee shops, bars, law offices, and service businesses within a block or two. Some have been here for generations: Palace Barber Shop on North Church Street has been cutting hair downtown since 1932.
The feel changes with the time of day. Weekday mornings bring courthouse and office traffic and the coffee crowd; lunch and dinner fill the restaurants on the square; and on Saturday mornings from May through October the Saturday Market sets up around the courthouse from 8 AM to noon, with local produce, meats, baked goods, crafts, and live music (see our guide to the farmers market near the Square). Downtown Murfreesboro is also the city's oldest district. Murfreesboro served as the capital of Tennessee from 1818 to 1826, and the courthouse on the square was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

History of the Murfreesboro Public Square
The Murfreesboro Public Square has served as the civic and commercial center of Rutherford County since the city was established in 1811. Named after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree, the city was the capital of Tennessee from 1818 to 1826. The current Rutherford County Courthouse, standing at the center of the square, was built between 1859 and 1861 and is one of only six remaining antebellum courthouses in Tennessee. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and has been the anchor of downtown Murfreesboro for generations.
