Where is South Church Street in Murfreesboro, TN?

South Church Street is the main road south from Murfreesboro's Public Square, where it forms the east side of the square beside the Rutherford County Courthouse. Signed as US 231, it crosses Vine Street near City Hall, Broad Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard, meets Interstate 24 at Exit 81 and becomes Shelbyville Highway at Joe B. Jackson Parkway.

Church Street is one of the four streets that frame the Public Square. North of East Main Street it is North Church Street, a two-lane downtown block with restaurants and shops. South of the square it becomes South Church Street, and the character changes fast: two blocks of storefronts, then the Vine Street civic block, then a four-lane highway lined with offices, car dealers and chain restaurants all the way to the interstate.

The easiest way to picture the street is in three stretches. Each one has its own kind of business, parking and traffic.

Downtown: the square to Broad Street

The first few blocks. Storefronts on the square, then the Vine Street block with City Hall, the library and the Civic Plaza garage a block west. Sidewalks, street parking and the only part of the street most people walk.

Mid-town: Broad Street to I-24

The 700 through 2100 blocks. Insurance and real estate offices and a funeral home in the 800 block, then a car dealership, martial arts and dance studios, Thai, Mexican, barbecue and soul food restaurants, a Ramada and a Cracker Barrel as the road reaches the interstate.

South of I-24 to Joe B. Jackson Parkway

The 2400 through 3400 blocks. A 24-hour McDonald's and travel stops by the exit, then Sky Zone, sushi, pho and Thai restaurants, the Innsbrooke center, Kroger, Goodwill and America's Thrift Stores, a nursery, Walgreens and Planet Fitness, with Barfield Crescent Park on the west side near the end.

Getting Around South Church Street

Driving. From Nashville, take I-24 East to Exit 81 and follow South Church Street north; it runs straight into the Public Square. From the square, South Church Street is the direct route to the interstate, about two and a half miles south. The road is four lanes for most of that distance and widens to seven or eight lanes at the interchange. The stretch south of I-24 is posted at 45 mph.

Parking. Downtown has on-street spaces and two public parking garages one block from the square, including the Civic Plaza garage off Vine and Church streets. Main Street Murfreesboro's parking guide says there is no parking time limit in the evenings or on weekends, while some on-street spaces have posted weekday limits, so check the signs. South of Broad Street the street is car-oriented and the businesses have their own lots.

Bus. Murfreesboro Transit's South Church Route leaves the Transit Center at 324 New Salem Highway on the hour from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, runs down Broad Street and the length of South Church Street with timed stops at Rutherford Boulevard, Warrior Drive and Innsbrooke Boulevard, and returns to the Transit Center before the top of the next hour. The city says the route serves City Hall, Linebaugh Public Library, the Public Square, the post office, Daymar Institute and the Innsbrooke shopping center. The adult fare is $1, day passes are $4, veterans with ID ride free, and there is no Sunday or holiday service. Every bus has a bike rack and is wheelchair accessible.

Walking and biking. The downtown blocks between the square and Vine Street are an easy walk with sidewalks on both sides. South of Broad Street the road is a highway, so cross at the signals and expect long gaps between crosswalks.

Cross streets from north to south

  1. Public Square and East Main Street. The street starts on the east side of the square at the Rutherford County Courthouse.
  2. Vine Street. City Hall (111 W Vine St) and Linebaugh Public Library (105 W Vine St) are one block west; the Civic Plaza parking garage is off Vine and Church.
  3. Broad Street (NW and SE Broad). The first major crossing. US 231 joins South Church Street here, and the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring is just east on SE Broad.
  4. Middle Tennessee Boulevard. Meets South Church Street from the east in the 1500 block.
  5. Rutherford Boulevard. South Rutherford Boulevard crosses near the 1900 block, by the Ramada and Rick's BBQ, north of the interstate.
  6. Interstate 24, Exit 81. Ramps to Nashville and Chattanooga. The road is at its widest here, seven to eight lanes with turn lanes.
  7. Warrior Drive and Butler Drive. A bus timepoint south of the interstate, near Sky Zone and Pad Thai Cafe.
  8. Barfield Crescent Road and Innsbrooke Boulevard. Near Kroger, Goodwill and the Innsbrooke center. Barfield Crescent Park sits on the west side of the road; the main park entrance is off Veterans Parkway.
  9. Joe B. Jackson Parkway. Where South Church Street ends and the same road continues south as Shelbyville Highway (US 231).

Nearby Neighborhoods and Attractions

At the north end, the Public Square is the center of downtown, with the courthouse, Friday Night Live concerts and the downtown restaurants within a block or two. The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring (502 SE Broad St) is just east of the Broad Street intersection.
