Palace Barber Shop History
- 1932
Palace Barber Shop opens in March in the basement of the Commerce Union Bank, managed by Ira Johns, formerly of the White Front Barber Shop, with Chas Vaughn, Roy L. Pugh and P. W. Carter.
- 1950s
After 22 years in the bank basement, the shop moves to 111 East Main Street.
- 1969
Palace gets what the newspaper called an “ultra modern” makeover.
- 1987
Longtime shoeshine man Jim “Snap-eye” Taylor marks 65 years in the business while working at Palace. Owner Randall Hall calls him “an institution around Murfreesboro.”
- 1993
Palace announces its move to 110 North Church Street, where it operates today.

For decades, customers at Palace also got a shine from Jim “Snap-eye” Taylor, a Murfreesboro shoeshine man who worked at the shop in the bank basement and on East Main Street. In a 1987 Daily News-Journal profile, written as he turned 75 and marked 65 years in the trade, Taylor remembered when polish cost a dime and people came just to hear him “pop the rag.”
