About Long Hunter State Park
Long Hunter State Park is a 2,670-acre Tennessee state park on the shores of J. Percy Priest Lake at 2910 Hobson Pike in Hermitage, just east of Nashville. It is named for the 18th-century frontiersmen known as long hunters, who made hunting and trapping expeditions into the wilderness that lasted months or years. The park has more than 36 miles of hiking trails through deep woods, shoreline, karst topography, grassy barrens and rare cedar glades, including a two-mile paved loop around Couchville Lake, the 4-mile Bryant Grove Trail along the Percy Priest shoreline and the 0.9-mile Cedar Glade Trail around the Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area. Mountain bikers can ride the 5-mile intermediate Jones Mill Mountain Bike Trail in the Bryant Grove Recreation Area. The 110-acre Couchville Lake is open year-round to paddlers who bring their own paddlecraft, with no gas motors or personal watercraft allowed, and the park has two public boat ramps onto the 14,000-acre J. Percy Priest Lake, where anglers fish for bass, crappie, white bass, hybrid striped bass, catfish and bream. Bryant Grove has the park's only swim beach, with unsupervised swimming, and picnic areas with sunset views over the lake. Overnight options are two hike-in backcountry campsites, reached by a 6-mile hike from the Day Loop/Volunteer Trailhead, and three primitive group camping areas.
What to know before you go
- Day-use areas are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. during daylight saving time and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during standard time
- Park office and visitor center: daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. for lunch and on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
- The boat house and fishing pier are closed until further notice for safety reasons
- Swimming is allowed only at the Bryant Grove beach (unsupervised); it is prohibited in Couchville Lake and near boat ramps
- Cell service is limited in the park; the visitor center has reliable service
