Main Street Murfreesboro organizes the annual lighting of the Rutherford County Christmas tree on the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse lawn, presented by Middle Tennessee Electric and held on the first Friday night of December. In its most recently published schedule, from 2025, free activities such as crafts, hot cocoa, games, carriage rides and choir performances began at 6:00 PM, stage performances and the tree lighting by Santa followed at 6:30 PM, and free photos with Santa inside the courthouse ran from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. Main Street had not posted a 2026 schedule as of September 13, 2026, so times may change. Public Square parking closed at 4:00 PM for the event in 2025, with parking available in the Civic Plaza and County Judicial garages.
