What ID do I need to vote in Tennessee?

The Tennessee Secretary of State says all voters must show a federal or Tennessee state ID with the voter's name and photograph when voting at the polls, whether early or on Election Day, unless an exemption applies. Any of these may be used, even if expired:

  • Tennessee driver license with a photo
  • U.S. passport
  • Photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security
  • Photo ID issued by the federal or Tennessee state government
  • U.S. military photo ID
  • Tennessee handgun carry permit with a photo

The state says college student IDs are not acceptable, nor are photo IDs from counties, cities or other states, such as library cards. First-time voters who registered by mail or online and bring an expired ID must also show a document with their name and address, such as a current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck.

The Secretary of State lists exemptions for absentee-by-mail voters, residents of licensed nursing homes or assisted living centers who vote at the facility, hospitalized voters, voters with a religious objection to being photographed, and voters who are indigent and cannot get a photo ID without paying a fee.

What is on the Nov. 3 ballot in Rutherford County?

The Election Commission has posted a general sample ballot for the Nov. 3 state and federal general election. It includes races for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, the Tennessee Senate and Tennessee House of Representatives, plus three proposed amendments to the Tennessee Constitution. OnlyInMurfreesboro's guide to the Tennessee constitutional amendments on the November ballot explains each one.

The commission has also posted separate sample ballots for Eagleville, LaVergne and Smyrna, which have town races on the same ballot. Those races are covered in the Smyrna, LaVergne and Eagleville municipal elections article. All four sample ballots are on the Rutherford County Election Commission page.

Did my congressional district change?

It may have. The Tennessee Secretary of State says the General Assembly adopted revised congressional districts during its Second Extraordinary Session in May 2026. The Election Commission links to that notice from its home page, and the county's general sample ballot lists more than one U.S. House district.

Voters can check which district they live in now with the state's revised district look-up by address. The Comptroller's office also has detailed maps of each district.
