What is The Hamery in Murfreesboro?

The Hamery is a family-run country ham business at 411 West Lytle Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, open since 1968. It cures its hams, smokes them with hickory and apple wood and ages them on the premises, and sells them uncooked or cooked along with ham and sausage biscuits, country bacon, fresh pork sausage and Tennshootoe, its prosciutto-style ham. The store is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Hamery says its hams are “slow cured for four seasons” and that only a limited number are cured each year. The shop also sells jams, honey, sorghum, pickles, chow chow, sauces and spreads, seasonings, cheese, butter and coffee, plus gift boxes, and it ships orders from its online store.

The store is on West Lytle Street, a few blocks northwest of the Public Square. In summer The Hamery also sells at the downtown Saturday Market on the Square.

History of The Hamery

Col. Tom Givan and Dr. Sam Woods started the business in Murfreesboro in 1968 as G & W Hamery, because they wanted the old-fashioned cured country ham they remembered. About ten years later it passed to Bob Woods, Dr. Woods' grandson, who ran The Hamery for decades. Today it is owned by Peter Bennett, Bob Woods' mentee, and the shop says its curing method “hasn't changed much” from the original sugar-cure recipe.

The Hamery lists ribbons from the Tennessee State Fair, the Wilson County Fair and the Spring Hill Country Ham Festival. In 2026 Main Street Murfreesboro gave owner Peter Bennett and former owner Bob Woods its “Built to Last” award, and the shop was named Best Specialty Shop in Rutherford County at the Main Street awards. It was also the 2015 Main Street Downtown Business of the Year.
