About This Event
Oaklands Mansion hosts a free historical presentation on Victorian hair work, funded by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. Led by Oaklands staff member and hair work researcher Jody Johnson, the program examines how 19th-century society viewed human hair as a sentimental and durable art medium, the lives of the era's hair artists including their footprint in Tennessee, and how the craft gave Victorian women a path to independent artistry and entrepreneurship. Guests also enjoy a behind-the-ropes tour of the mansion, see original antique examples of hair art and watch live demonstrations of traditional table-braiding and wirework methods.
